Easy French Toast

I decided to make French toast for the first time in ages and went to double check the ingredients as I was fuzzy about how much milk to use, and that's when I realized I never saved my recipe for posterity! (That is to say, forgetful me!) What follows is my long-term go to. Make it as is, change it completely, but the basics (an egg with a third of a cup of milk) make a lovely, quick, very customizable French toast. I hope you enjoy it as much and as long as I have!

Easy French Toast

(2 servings)

Ingredients

1 egg

1/3 cup of milk

1 teaspoon of orange blossom water* (if desired)

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Cardamom (to taste)

Cinnamon (to taste)

Nutmeg (to taste)

4 slices of toast bread

Butter (as needed)

Maple syrup (as needed)

Peanut butter** (as needed)

*I love the floral notes that orange blossom water gives French toast, but I often substitute rose water if I'm feeling it.

**This is my husband's favorite thing to put on his French toast. I really don't get it, but to each their own!

Directions

1) Put a pan over medium heat and leave a bit of butter to melt while you whisk together the egg, milk, orange blossom water, vanilla, and spices before pouring the dipping mixture into a shallow bowl or deep plate.

2) Dip the bread slices in the egg and milk mixture, then place in the pan and cook until golden brown on both sides. Add butter bit by bit to the pan as needed to keep the French toast from sticking.

3) Serve as is, with some maple syrup (or peanut butter if you're into that), et cetera, and enjoy!
