Spiced Hot Chocolate

I've been making spiced hot chocolate for a few years now, so long that when I have friends over and they've (A) never heard of it and (B) love it I'm a little surprised since it's such an ordinary thing to me! I was reminded recently that it isn't ordinary to a lot of people though, so I thought I'd post a "recipe" (more like generic guidelines) for those of you who've never thought to spice up your hot cocoa a bit! Whether you're making hot chocolate from scratch or with packets this is a super easy way to take your hot chocolate to the next level!

Spiced Hot Chocolate

Ingredients
Cocoa powder
Milk
Sugar
or
Hot chocolate packet(s)
and
Cardamom
Cinnamon
Cloves (powdered)
Nutmeg
Pepper

Directions
1) Lord, bless!
2) If you're making hot chocolate from scratch, put whole milk (mixed with water, as preferred) in a pot on the stove over medium heat and stir in the cocoa and sugar - start small and build up to the strength and sweetness you want. (It all depends on how many mugs you're making, whether you want dark hot cocoa, sweet or not so much...) If you're making one mug, then add a couple of shakes of cardamom, cinnamon, and nutmeg and slight sprinkles of powdered cloves and pepper. (Make sure that sprinkle of clove is very slight - it's strong stuff!) Bring almost to a boil, pour into your mug(s), and enjoy!
or
2) Throw your hot chocolate packet(s) in your mug(s) along with the spices (as outlined above) and fill the mug(s) a quarter or third full with milk before topping off with boiling water and enjoy!

  1. Me :-). I don't know if I grew up with it, picked it up from someone (if so, apologies for forgetting who!), or just threw all my favorite spices together one day. It works though :-).
